Help us welcome our first team member, Production Director Justin Smith.

Q: What inspired you to become an organizer for this event?

A: When I heard there was an opportunity to join the production team for prestigious equine event in a beautiful city, I knew it was a dream pairing. My event production background and many years of horsemanship on a small farm in Georgia were the perfect pairing for the role. Bringing two of my biggest passions together has been a dream come true.

Q: Could you share a brief overview of your background and experience that led you to take on this role?

A: I formerly lived and worked on a horse farm in Georgia and have been producing sporting events since 2009. I have worked in equine facilities across the US and Canada, raced my own horses in trail endurance competitions and love the atmosphere of a track on raceday!

Q: What goals do you have for this event and its participants?

A:  Our primary goal will always be a safe and entertaining experience for spectators, athletes (both equine and jockeys), staff and volunteers. In 2023 specifically, we want to offer more entertainment options between races, more local businesses in our merchant market, and better culinary experiences in our VIP tent and at our food trucks.

Q: How do you manage the challenges of organizing, and what strategies do you use to overcome them?

A: Having an experienced production team is the key to our success. We have incredibly talented staff from a wide range of backgrounds who all bring different skills to the table. Event logistics are like a puzzle and each person our team helps bring it all together to create memorable experiences. We also receive support from our generous sponsors, the Stono Ferry HOA team who keep the grounds pristine and our core group of volunteers.

As we peel back the curtain on the Steeplechase of Charleston organizers, the spotlight will soon shine on another member of our dynamic team. Keep an eye out for the next installment!
