The Alston Cup
The Alston Cup made its debut in 2019 as a signature race, featuring the historic trophy that has been passed down through eight generations of one of Charleston’s most prominent racing families. Named for Colonel William Alston—a wealthy planter, state senator, and American Revolution patriot—this prestigious race celebrates a legacy that dates back to the earliest days of American horse racing. The trophy itself stands as an enduring symbol of South Carolina’s rich equestrian heritage, connecting modern spectators to the sport’s colonial roots.

National Anthem: A Stirring Performance by Grammy Winners

Grammy Award-winning artists Quiana Parler and Charlton Singleton of Ranky Tanky delivered a powerful National Anthem to launch the 2020 race. Set against Charleston’s iconic church steeples, this innovative production was one of the event’s creative solutions during the pandemic year. As one of the few major events still held in 2020, the performance reached global audiences through livestreams on the National Steeplechase Association (NSA), Blood Horse, and Horse and Country TV platforms.
Horse of a Feather
Artist Kris Manning transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary with “Horse of a Feather,” a life-sized thoroughbred sculpture adorned with more than 50,000 meticulously placed feathers. This mesmerizing piece has become a crowd favorite, drawing visitors to capture its intricate details and ethereal beauty through photographs.

Corgi Cup Enters the Race
The inaugural Corgi Cup, in partnership with the Lowcountry Corgi Association and honoring Queen Elizabeth II’s beloved breed, quickly became an unexpected crowd favorite. Spectators lined the track to watch the charismatic, stubby-legged competitors dash—or attempt to dash—toward victory in this royal-inspired race. While the goal was a straightforward sprint to the finish line, many of the enthusiastic pups had other plans, delighting audiences as they cheerfully ran in circles or stopped for impromptu meet-and-greets with their fellow racers.

After an exhilarating day of races, tradition came alive in the winner’s circle as fellow jockeys showered the champion with bottles of champagne in a jubilant celebration.
