First Time at the Steeplechase of Charleston? Here’s What You Need to Know
There’s nothing quite like your first day at the Steeplechase of Charleston presented by Lexus. The horses, the tailgates, the people, the food and everything happening around the racetrack make it a fall experience unlike any other.
If November 15 will be your first time joining us, a little planning can help you make the most of your day. From what to bring and where to park to what you won’t want to miss, here’s what every first-timer should know.
So, What Exactly Is Steeplechase?
Let’s start with the obvious question: What is a steeplechase?
Steeplechase is a form of horse racing where horses and jockeys race around a course while jumping fences along the way. It’s fast, exciting and even more impressive when you see it in person.
But at the Steeplechase of Charleston, the races are only part of the experience. Race day is also about gathering with friends, enjoying a tailgate, exploring the Merchant Market, finding something delicious to eat, watching the Corgi Cup and spending a beautiful fall day outside.
And if you’re wondering about betting, here’s one thing to know before you arrive: there is no gambling on the races in South Carolina. You can still choose your favorite horse, cheer as loudly as you want and claim bragging rights if your pick wins!
Pick the Experience That Fits You
There’s more than one way to do Steeplechase, so start by deciding what kind of race day sounds best to you.
General Admission gives you the freedom to explore the grounds, find your favorite viewing spots and experience everything happening throughout the day. Keep in mind that GA parking is off-site and requires a shuttle ride to and from the racetrack.
Want a home base for your group? A Tailgate Package gives you a dedicated space where you can gather, eat, drink and enjoy one of Steeplechase’s favorite traditions.
Or make your first year extra special with the Lexus VIP Lounge, where you can reserve a table for six or eight and enjoy food, drinks and an upgraded race day experience.
There’s no wrong choice. It’s all about how you want to spend your day.
Parking Is Part of the Plan
Knowing how you’re getting to and from the racetrack ahead of time can make race day much easier.
If you have General Admission parking, remember that parking is off-site and requires a shuttle ride to the racetrack. Give yourself a little extra time for parking, boarding the shuttle and getting through the gates.
If someone is dropping you off or you’re using Uber, Lyft or another rideshare service, designated drop-off and pick-up areas will be available.
Guests who require handicap-accessible parking should email us ahead of race day so we can get your information and provide you with the details you’ll need when you arrive.
Early Birds Get More Race Day
Gates open at 8 a.m., and there’s a reason experienced racegoers arrive early.
Give yourself time to get parked, find your spot, set up your tailgate, explore the grounds and see what’s happening before the racing action begins. Traffic can start backing up around 10 a.m., so an earlier arrival can make getting into the event much easier.
Plus, the earlier you arrive, the more race day you get to enjoy.
Wear What Makes You Comfortable

You’ll see a little bit of everything at Steeplechase, and that’s part of the fun.
Some racegoers love breaking out the dresses, hats, fascinators and bow ties. Others prefer jeans, boots or something casual and comfortable. There’s no one way you have to dress for Steeplechase. Wear what feels like you and what will keep you comfortable throughout the day.
Just remember that you’ll be outside and walking on grass, so comfortable shoes and dressing for the weather are always smart.
And whether you dress up or keep it casual, there will be plenty of opportunities for a great race day photo.
Pack Like a Pro
A few race day essentials can make a big difference. Check the weather before you leave, bring sunscreen, charge your phone and consider bringing a portable charger. Depending on your ticket, you may also want chairs, blankets, a cooler and everything you need for your tailgate.
Make sure to download or screenshot your tickets before you arrive so they’re ready when you reach the gate.
Leave These at Home
A few things should not make it onto your race day packing list. Umbrellas are not permitted, so check the forecast and plan accordingly. Pets should also stay home, with the exception of participating Corgi Cup dogs. Grills and open flames are not permitted.

Get Close to the Action
Watching your first steeplechase race is exciting from just about anywhere, but at least once during the day, find a viewing spot near one of the jumps.
Hearing the horses approach and watching them clear a fence right in front of you is a completely different experience than watching from farther away.
Before the races, stop by the paddock to get an up-close look at the horses as they prepare to head out onto the racetrack. Then, after a race, make your way to the Winner’s Circle to see the winning horse and celebrate the victory. Both give you a closer look at the traditions and excitement surrounding the racing itself.
First-Timer Pro Tip: Don’t watch every race from the same place. Explore the racetrack and experience the action from a few different viewpoints.
There’s Plenty to Explore Between Races
There’s always something happening beyond the racing action. Explore the Merchant Market, grab something to eat, watch the Opening Ceremonies, enjoy the band and take some time to walk around the grounds.

Make It a Family Memory

Children 12 and under receive free General Admission, but don’t forget to get their ticket when you purchase yours. Everyone entering Steeplechase needs a ticket, including children.
