You’ll need to clear your calendars and perhaps even your boots after celebrating National “I Love Horses” Day this month, on July 15th. Established to “celebrate the beauty and significance of horses”, this day holds a special place in the hearts of Steeplechase team members, jockeys, and attendees alike.

For some, this may be the first time learning about this special day. So, we’ve compiled a list of activities one could do to show their admiration for this smart, sporty animal.

Want to go to one place? Visit the Middleton Place Equestrian Center

The Middleton Place Equestrian Center, located right next to Magnolia Plantation, while not a sanctuary, is a L.E.A.R.N.-based organization, which means all of the horses on site are rescued. They offer everything from boarding facilities to guided horseback riding tours, providing endless opportunities to connect with equine excellence.

  • Go Horseback Riding

One of the best ways to connect with horses, aside from petting their manes in the stables, is to ride them bareback. Exploring the trails of the Lowcountry under the canopy of trees allows you to enjoy nature while escaping the summer sun. Trees, to escape the summer sun.

  • Donate and Advocate

If you’re feeling rather philanthropic, consider donating to Middleton Place or other horse rehabs and sanctuaries. H.O.P.E. Acres Rescue is a non-profit based in Bonneau, SC, that focuses on rehabilitating neglected and abused horses from across the state.

Want to give back? Volunteer at a local horse rescue or therapy center

Many equine-based organizations rely heavily on volunteers to help care for the horses and maintain their facilities. Organizations like H.O.P.E. Acres and C.A.T.R. (Charleston Area Therapeutic Riding) offer programs for horse lovers where they can spend time grooming, feeding or simply just being present with these gentle giants. No experience needed, just a love for horses!

Want to stay in? Have a horse-themed movie marathon or share your love for horses on social media

Want an adventure? Visit the National Steeplechase Museum & Website

The best way to celebrate this day is by learning about horses and the history of steeplechasing, even though the National Steeplechase Museum in Camden, SC, is closed until November. However, you can still access the museum’s website for more information.

Wesley Faulkenberry, Director of the Museum, expressed, “We are looking forward to our grand reopening in November for the 50th Running of the Marion duPont Scott Colonial Cup! We’ll be unveiling our newest exhibit  “The Colonial Cup: Crowning Champions Since 1970” commemorating the rich history of the Colonial Cup races and the champions, both horse and human, that have won it.

One more way to celebrate: Get ready for Steeplechase of Charleston
