Race Day Ready: Safety First, Fun Always!
A great day at the Steeplechase of Charleston starts with a little planning! With thousands of guests, beautiful Thoroughbreds and 60 acres of Lowcountry countryside, a few simple precautions can help everyone enjoy the day without a hitch.
Before heading to Stono Ferry Racetrack on Sunday, November 15, here are a few things worth remembering.
Dress for the Day, Not Just the Pictures!
November weather in Charleston can be full of surprises! Bring a jacket or layers, pack a change of shoes for walking around the grounds and don’t forget sunscreen. Those fabulous race day hats can come in handy, too!
Leave the umbrellas and parasols at home. They’re not permitted because they can obstruct views and startle the horses. And don’t forget to drink plenty of water throughout the day!

Watching horses fly over the jumps is one of the biggest thrills of steeplechase racing, but remember to stay behind the designated spectator barriers and keep a safe distance from the track.
Keep a close eye on children, especially near the paddock, jumps and busy tailgate areas. With so much excitement happening, it’s also a good idea to choose a family meeting spot in case anyone gets separated.
And while everyone loves their furry friends, pets must stay home. Only the corgis participating in the official Corgi Cup are permitted on the grounds.
Tailgate Smart!
A little preparation goes a long way toward a great tailgate! Grills, propane, fireworks and open flames are not permitted, so plan your menu accordingly.
If you’re bringing alcoholic beverages, make sure you have a designated driver or arrange transportation ahead of time. Need a ride home? We have designated Uber and Lyft pickup lanes to make getting home a little easier. Enjoy the festivities, but make sure everyone gets home safely!
Safety Behind the Scenes
While guests are enjoying the races, a dedicated team is looking out for our horses and jockeys. From veterinary inspections before racing to paramedics stationed at every jump and specialized equine ambulances on-site, safety is an important part of every race.
In the unlikely event of an emergency, please give our trained professionals the space they need to do their jobs. Emergency response plans are in place, and our teams are prepared to act quickly. The best way to help is to stay clear, follow staff instructions and let the professionals handle the situation.
Our equine athletes are the stars of the show, and keeping them and their riders safe takes months of preparation and teamwork.
Know Where to Find Help!
Need medical assistance on race day? Our First Aid tent will be staffed by MUSC and located in the Merchant Market, in the first row all the way to the left! Whether you need medical attention or have a safety concern, don’t hesitate to ask an event staff member for assistance. Our medical professionals will be on-site and ready to help throughout the day.
See You at the Races!
