Countdown to the Steeplechase: Everything You Need for the Perfect Race Day

As the leaves turn and the Lowcountry air takes on that crisp autumn chill, it can only mean one thing — Steeplechase of Charleston is almost here! Whether you’re a seasoned tailgater or joining us for the first time, race day is about more than just thrilling horse races; it’s a celebration of Southern charm, community, and culinary creativity. From stylish setups to delicious fall-inspired bites and cocktails, here’s everything you need to get race day ready and make the most of your Steeplechase experience.

Tailgate Like a Pro

Before we get into the fun part, let’s start with what not to bring. While grills are a tailgating staple, due to the nature of this event and the presence of horses, open flames, grills, propane tanks, and fireworks are prohibited. To keep your food warm, consider using a warming tray or crock pot instead — it’s safer and still keeps your dishes deliciously hot.

To ensure the safety of both guests and equine athletes, parasols, sun umbrellas, and beach or patio umbrellas are not permitted on race day.

If you’d like to bring your own tent, there’s a 20 dollar “Bring Your Own Tent” fee. You can add this option during ticket purchase, or email info@steeplechaseofcharleston.com if you’ve already bought your tickets.

Important: Tents must be properly secured with tent stakes for everyone’s safety. Tent setups that are unsecured or without the paid “Bring Your Own Tent” option are subject to removal.

Now that we’ve covered the essentials, let’s focus on everything you can bring to create your perfect race-day setup.

A Taste of Fall: Tailgating Recipes You’ll Love

No Southern celebration is complete without a spread of comforting, flavorful dishes — and race day is the perfect excuse to show off your fall favorites.

Autumn Sausage and Apple Sliders
Mini brioche buns meet savory sausage patties, caramelized onions, and thin apple slices, finished with a drizzle of Dijon-honey sauce. These sliders are simple to prep ahead and reheat on-site — a bite-sized crowd-pleaser that’s both hearty and festive.

Blade & Bow Bourbon Whiskey Chili
Want something warm and comforting? Add a touch of Steeplechase spirit to your tailgate with this bourbon-infused chili. Slow-cooked and rich, it’s the ultimate shareable dish for chilly race mornings.

Recipe Idea: Combine ground beef or turkey with onions, beans, tomatoes, and your favorite chili spices. As it simmers, add a splash (about 2 tablespoons) of Blade & Bow Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey for depth and flavor. The bourbon enhances the richness of the chili and adds a subtle smokiness. Serve with shredded cheddar and cornbread muffins for the perfect tailgate comfort food.

Pro tip: Since open flames and grills aren’t allowed, keep your chili piping hot in a crock pot or warming tray — easy, safe, and delicious.

Sip in Style: The Official Blade & Bow Cocktail

Raise a glass to race day with a signature sip that perfectly captures the spirit of the Steeplechase. As the official bourbon of the Charleston Steeplechase, Blade & Bow brings timeless craftsmanship and Kentucky tradition to every pour.

The Lowcountry Caddie
1.5 oz. Blade and Bow
2.5 oz. peach iced tea
2 oz. natural lemonade
Fresh mint and lemon wheel garnish

Fill a highball glass with ice and add the ingredients. Stir, garnish with fresh mint and a lemon wheel, and enjoy. Please drink responsibly and have a plan for getting home.

Blade and Bow Bourbon Whiskey Chili
You can also use this bourbon in a pot of hearty chili. Slow-cooked chili is ideal for tailgating because it’s shareable, easy to eat, and reheatable. Keep in mind, open flames and grills are prohibited on the racetrack, so a warming crock pot will be your best friend.
